save the date

So we finally sent out our "Save the Date" postcards over the weekend. Above is the illustration I made of me and Jenn that was used on the postcards. The days are counting down and we are pretty close to the finish line. Or should I say starting line? We've had a little over a year to plan for our wedding, and let me tell you that it flew by just like that (Insert any sound of snapping fingers, except the triple z "oh no you didn't" snap).

you sexy beast

Lately, I've been hard at work redesigning these children's book covers. Whoa, did I just say hard at work? That's right. This slack bastard has been burning the midnight, or should I say, 5am oil. Above are a few character design concepts I've been working on. Me likes me blue lead. I thought I'd lost my trusty mech-pencil containing said blue lead on the move to San Diego. How I've missed you so, my trusty mech-pencil containing said blue lead that I thought I had lost.

Anyhoo, I finally have something to hang my heavy bag on. Jenn got me this nifty heavy bag stand with an equally nifty speed bag for me as a happy belated birthday/Christmas present. It's been awhile since I've done anything close to exercising. I'm not really sure if walking upstairs counts. I really haven't found anyone to spar around here so my new present is a great alternative for the meantime. I even hung my trusty helmet on the heavy bag to simulate a sparring partner or diabolical evil supervillain. Though I was able to fight a few short last minute rounds at the WEKAF regionals, I won't be able to make it to the nationals on account of much more important matters (hint, hint: wedding) and the fact that I've turned into a lazy, out-of-shape eskrimador. But with this new nifty heavy bag setup, I'm on my way to returning to my former sexy beast self.

Over the weekend we spent Jenn's birthday with her family at her brother's place in Ventura. Here are a few flickrs for your enjoyment.

island dj

Aloha. Here's a commissioned piece done for Island DJ Melanie who I met at last years Comic-Con. She dug the sketch I had done for her at the con and wanted the same idea spiced up for a logo design. That's what I dig so much about conventions, you get to meet cool folks who inspire you to create.

Here's the original sketch from the con.

And here's what I had for dinner. What do these have in common? Absolutely nothing. Jenn prepared a delicious meal for me, stuffed salmon with cheesy rice. We had gone grocery shopping in hopes of changing our eating habits to a more healthy approach. Upon reaching the register we had noticed that our checkout items had matured from the days of TV dinners, soda, and anything that had the word chocolate (which was the last time we had gone grocery shopping). Looks like we're all grown-up. Now if you will excuse me, my cartoons are on.

illustration friday: e is for...

E is for me, Erwin. So here's a shot of me and a painting of mine back when I enjoyed painting on anything but canvases. I miss the smell of Krylon in the morning.

Anyhoo, check out some of these awesome art blogs I stumbled upon when I should have been busy doing work:

character sketches

Two weeks into the new year and the work just keeps on coming. Which is a good thing because it's work that translates to money which translates to me deciding whether to spend it on groceries or an army of porcelain pig chefs. But it also means I have to actually get of my ass and do something productive. As if watching the special features on all my new DVD's in the comfort of my boxers isn't productive enough. Anyhoo, these are a few character design concepts I did for a new client. They decided to take the character in a different direction so it's back to the drawingboard.

Hope the holiday season treated everyone well. Before I go, let me introduce you to the newest member of our little family...

illustration friday: flavor

First post of the new year and I can't think of anything witty and/or clever to say. So here's my illFriday for this week. I've always thought she had a lotta flavor (or should I say "flava"). Tastes like avocado. An old image from the archive since I'm on vacation right now doing all kinds of nothing, while eating. It's cold, raining and windy in the Bay Area, and my sister is in Hawaii right now for her first semester at Manoa. It's cool though. My winter weight isn't translating too well to beachwear at the moment. Time for me to revisit last year's resolutions. Happy New Year. Now watch this trippy video. It tastes like crazy.

Imagine how Santa spends the other 364 days of the year. I know this is what I'd be doing if I had access to eight flying reindeer. Mele Kalikimaka everyone.

illustration friday: blue

This week's illFriday is blue. This snowboarder is blue. If I wore underwear, it would be blue. Coincidence? I think not.

BTW, ElectricFan 2006 Calendars are on sale now in my online shop. They make great gifts! Orders for the calendar will be open until Dec. 21 when the shop temporarily closes for the holidays until after the new year. So grab 'em while ya can!

belated happy turkey day : part 2

Last night was round two of Face Stuffing 2005 over at Jenn's family. And as a family get-together tradition, I held an impromptu art class in the living room.

Critiquing an up-and-coming artist's work.

belated happy turkey day

Home for Thanksgiving and it's freakin' cold. Cold! We've adapted to the warm San Diego weather. Couple flicks of arts and crafts day with Mr. ChriStance. And some sweet canvas action including the never-ending pasta bowl. Got me hyped to create again. After I make myself a leftover turket sandwich with moist-maker.

illustration friday: strength

This week's illFriday topic is Cows. Cows! Ok, so it's really strength. Strength like a cow! I've been playing around with last weeks illo and came up with this. Been on a sci-fi kick lately since Episode III came out on dvd and Battlefront II came out for xbox. It's a freakin' fanboy overdose and I'm running out of veins. I even lured Jenn into watching all 6 episodes with me. She's never seen any of them. So it was a kick watching this whole new universe unfold right in front of her. Almost like seeing it for the first time myself. We watched it in chronological order instead of the original/prequel way. And I must say that it was a different experience for me. The original still looks great despite its age and the noticeable cg add-ons. I've even developed a better appreciation for the prequels. It might not have been the way I had envisioned it, but it sure was entertaining eye-candy. Yoda is my hero.

Look! More cows!

More of me playing around with this idea.

illustration friday: night

So I've missed the last couple of illFridays. I've been a bit preoccupied. Well, I'm back for this week's topic. Better late than never. I've had this sketch of a farm house for awhile now. It was an environmental concept for this character of mine. I've had this idea for a comic book starring this unnamed spacegirl. But it just ain't clicking yet. So I thought I'd revisit this sketch and put some color to it.

While you're at it, check out Illustrator CS2 Killer Tips by Dave Cross and Matt Klowskowski. I was asked to contribute a few of my pieces in there as visuals for some of the tutorials. A lot of good techniques in there. And check out their video podcast, Photoshop TV (formerly Photoshop Radio).

pumpkins

Pumpkins!
IMG_3591

It's been a while since we've carved a pumpkin, so Jenn and I decided to grab a few pumpkins this weekend. We also picked up a couple pumpkin carving kits complete with tools and stencils. Jenn did an awesome job on the haunted house, while I struggled a bit with the smaller ones and trying to figure out what I'd like to do with the other big pumkin. I think it came out alright, but far from what I had in mind. Not bad at all and I'm sure we'll come off tighter next year. Now this guy, The Pumpkin Gutter, is freakin' tight!

BTW, check out my better half's new blogspot, Dumpster for my thoughts. Have a safe Halloween.
